The GRE On-Screen Calculator: What It Does, What It Can't Do, and How to Use It
Yes, the GRE gives you an on-screen calculator — but only in the Quantitative Reasoning sections, and you cannot bring your own. Here is exactly what it can do, when reaching for it costs you time, and where to practise on a working replica.

The short answer
Yes. ETS provides a basic on-screen calculator, and it appears in the Quantitative Reasoning sections only. You will not have it in Verbal Reasoning or Analytical Writing.
No, you cannot bring your own. Personal calculators are not permitted in the testing room unless they have been approved as a formal accommodation. The only personal items you may bring in are your ID and, if you choose, a mask. This is the same at a test centre and for the at-home test.
So the calculator question is settled for you: everyone gets the same tool, and the only real decision is when to use it.
What the GRE calculator can do
It is more capable than most people expect, and less capable than a scientific calculator.

The order-of-operations point is worth dwelling on, because it is widely misreported. The GRE calculator does respect standard precedence: parentheses first, then exponentiation including square roots, then multiplication and division left to right, then addition and subtraction left to right. You do not need to break a calculation into steps to protect it from being evaluated in the wrong order.
What it can't do

No exponent key. You can take square roots, but there is no general power function. Cubes and higher powers you enter by hand.

No trigonometric or logarithmic functions. They are not on the GRE, so this costs you nothing.

No scientific notation entry.

Eight digits of display. Any result needing more will not display in full.

Errors on undefined operations. Divide by zero, or take the square root of a negative number, and the display returns ERROR rather than a value.
That last one is occasionally useful as a signal. If you get ERROR on a problem you expected to have an answer, you have usually mis-entered the expression or mis-set the problem up.
The Transfer Display button, and where people lose points
Numeric Entry questions — the ones where you type an answer rather than choose one — include a Transfer Display button that moves the calculator's current value straight into the answer box.
It removes transcription errors, which is real value. But it introduces a different risk: the calculator's answer is not always the answer the question wants.
Two traps:
Rounding. If a question asks you to round to the nearest whole number, or to two decimal places, Transfer Display gives you the calculator's full value, not the rounded one. Transferring without reading the instruction again is a straightforward way to lose a question you solved correctly.
Form. If the answer box expects a fraction, or the question asks for a percentage, the calculator's decimal is the wrong form. Converting an exact fraction to a decimal is one of the specific cases ETS itself flags as a misuse of the calculator.
The habit that fixes both: read the answer instruction after you compute, not before. One second of checking, and Transfer Display becomes purely an accuracy gain.
When using the calculator costs you time
This is where the calculator actually affects scores, and it is not intuitive.
ETS is explicit that the calculator supplements your mathematics rather than replacing it, and it names the cases where reaching for it is a mistake:

Simple mental arithmetic. 10 − 4, 4 × 70, √25. Typing these is slower than knowing them.

When an exact fraction is wanted. Converting to a decimal loses precision and often makes the answer harder to match.

When reasoning or estimation would settle it faster. A great many Quant questions — particularly Quantitative Comparison — do not need a computed value at all. They need you to see that one quantity must be larger.
Where it genuinely earns its place: long division, square roots of awkward numbers, and multi-digit arithmetic where an error would be silent.
The pattern to watch for in your own practice is the reflex reach — opening the calculator before you have decided whether the question needs one. It is a small time leak that repeats across a section.
